One of the most amazing ZOOs is located in the City of Prague. Even though the zoo was first established in 1931, the biggest boom came during the 80´s and 90´s. The goal for the Zoo was to "advance the study of zoology, protect wildlife, and educate the public". It is located in the Troja district in the north of Prague. Nowadays the area of the zoo is 45 hectares (approx. 111 acres) and you can see about 4,600 animals that represent 630 species from all around the world.
The Prague Zoological Garden has contributed significantly to saving the Przewalski horse, the national symbol of Mongolia. For many years it was the biggest breeder of the this species in the world.
The worst time for Prague Zoo was during the devastating floods of 2002. Almost half of the zoo was flooded and a lot of animals died. Instead of keeping the old buildings new ones were built. For example the Indonesian Jungle, which you sholud not miss the opportunity of experiencing.
Every year the zoo has more than one million visitors and when you arrive there you will know why.
The Zoo offers a lot to see. The most important and interesting are:
The Indonesian Jungle
In March 2002, the Zoo started to build one of the biggest projects in the history of European Zoos. The Indonesian Jungle pavillon has the look of a big greenhouse. There is only one barrier between the animals and visitors - water. The pavillon is inhabited by orangutans, gibbons and other species of monkey, but you can also see Komodo dragons, exotic birds, flying foxes and other representatives of the fauna from Southeast Asia.
Africa Close Up
The newly reconstructed pavillon was opened in 2004. You can find there numerous interesting species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.
The Gorilla´s Pavillon
It was opened in September 2001, but it was completely flooded in 2002. The staff of the zoo did everything in their power to save the entire population, but unfortunately one male did not survive the flood. In June 2003 the pavilion was reconstructed and on 25th October, 2003, it was reopened. The females 'Shinda' and 'Kijivu' came back, and the new male 'Richard' arrived later. On 13th December, 2004, the first baby was born to female Kijivu - the female 'Moja'.
The Cable Car
One of the most interesting attractions of Prague Zoo is the cable car. The Transport Company of the City of Prague (Dopravni Podnik Praha) is the operator of the cableway in the zoo. The cableway runs from April to October and joins the bottom and the top part areas of the zoo. The length of its journey is 51 metres. The ticket is the same as for Prague metro and tram.
